INFORMATION
FOR THE LENTEN SEASON
Taken from the Ceremonial: The annual Lenten season is the fitting time to climb the holy mountain of Easter. The Lenten season has a double character, namely to prepare both catechumens and the faithful to celebrate the paschal mystery. The catechumens, both with the rite of election and scrutinizes, and by catechesis, are prepared for the celebration of the sacraments of Christian initiation; the faithful, ever more attentive to the word of God and prayer, prepare themselves by penance for the renewal of their baptismal promises.
Lent begins on Ash Wednesday and continues until the Mass of the Lord’s Supper on Holy Thursday. Let us together respond to the Lord’s gift of this Holy Season with renewed vigor and a new sense of hope. May our prayer, penance and charity change us and those we meet.
LENTEN REGULATIONS
Abstinence:
Catholics over 14 years of age are bound to the obligations of abstinence. Abstinence is to be observed on Ash Wednesday, Good Friday and the other Fridays of Lent. On days of abstinence, meat may not be used at all.
Fasting:
Catholics over the age of 18 and up to the beginning of their sixtieth (60th) year are bound to the obligation of fasting. Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are the days of fasting. On these days, only one full meal (meatless) is allowed. Two other meals (meatless), sufficient to maintain strength, may be taken according to each one’s needs, but together they should not equal another full meal. Eating between meals is not permitted; but liquids, including milk and fruit juices are allowed.
